Green is Yummy!

This is now my third year growing a garden. It’s something I never really thought about doing. Most of my coworkers grow their own gardens, so I thought I would give it a try. The first year, I planted a few things in large pots on the back porch to see if it was something I would have fun doing. Last year and this year, the garden has grown to be roughly 25 x 15. It has its ups and downs, but I really enjoy it. Currently, I have tomato plants, four different types of peppers, a zucchini plant that is huge, and of course, Jess’s favorite: cantaloupe.

Along with gardening, I have learned how to can fruits and veggies. I have put up a variety of jams including strawberry, blueberry, and blackberry. Most of the fruits come from our favorite, local u-pick farm.

We were surprised to have a ton of wild blackberries grow in our backyard this year.

From the garden, I will use the tomatoes and peppers to make and can my own homemade salsa and make different types of tomato sauces with the rest of the tomatoes. This year, I’ll also be canning fresh string beans, peaches, and apple sauce all of which are being sourced from local farms.

Looking forward to a eating out of the garden very soon.

  1. I’m just starting out with gardening this year, working with limited space on the balcony. Looking forward to reading more of your blog to see what has and has not worked for you!
