Hiccups…

Emma has hiccups every now and again. She used to have them really bad when we first got home, but now, they are random and inconsistently appear in our lives. When I hear I hiccup, it startles me. It breaks up whatever I am doing, and I focus in on my little girl. Sometimes life’s hiccups make us do the same thing.

Emma turned 8 months old Saturday. Time is not slowing down. It’s definitely bittersweet, but’s she is happy and healthy. That’s all we can truly ask for.

It may come as a surprise that we have not finalized Emma’s adoption. It may only be a few weeks left, but we’re not holding our breaths. Finalization couldn’t even start until after Emma had physically been our custody for 6 months. This wasn’t entirely clear to us at first. It was one of life’s hiccups – a small hiccup but a hiccup none the less. We kept hearing 6 months, but we didn’t know when that started. Obviously, Emma is our daughter. Nothing will really be changing. It’s just a process we’d like to be done (for now).

One of the things we’re most excited to start is a college savings plan for Emma. We need her social security for that, and we can’t get one until she’s legally adopted (and we get her birth certificate). People seemed shocked we don’t have either of those things, but it’s the way things have to be done with an adoption.

What are some of the hiccups you experienced with parenthood?
